Steps to Apply as a Military & Veteran Student
-
Apply for Veteran Educational Benefits
Don't delay! Approval of your Federal Veterans Affairs educational benefits can take up to 45 days, so the sooner you apply the better. To learn more and start your application, click the button below.
A Texas-sized Benefit
Hazlewood is a state of Texas benefit that provides qualified veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption, including most fee charges, at public institutions of higher education in Texas.
-
Submit Your Application
To complete your application, you'll need to create an account in our online system. Before you start, be sure to have handy:
- Your full contact information
- Social Security number (if you have one)
- Documents to answer the Texas residency questions
If you don’t have everything right now, you can start your application today and finish it later.
When you log in for the first time:
- Select “Start a new application.”
- On the next screen, select select your correct student type from the menu.
After you submit your application, you'll receive an email with your acceptance letter, your student ID number, and your P-number, if assigned.
Note: Returning students do NOT need to re-fill an application and can proceed to submit their VMASS Certification and Checklist items by logging into the Student Center.
-
Access the Student System & Complete Your Enrollment Checklist
After you receive your acceptance letter and welcome email, you'll need to access the student system and complete your enrollment checklist before you can officially become a student.
Once you've logged into the student system for the first time, you will need to complete your checklist for enrollment -- look for the "My Checklists" menu option. A checklist item will be added to your Student Center for the benefits indicated on your veteran certification request.
Your checklist may include:
- Submitting your transcripts from previous courses you completed
- Please visit jst.doded.mil to access military transcripts
- For Air Force transcripts, please visit airuniversity.af.edu
- Providing your proof of vaccination for meningitis
- Completing the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) test or submit your TSI test scores, if you took the test somewhere other than HCC
Your Enrollment Checklist
In the student system, choose the "My Checklists" menu to see which steps you need to complete. Your checklist will guide you through your next steps — like submitting documents, completing requirements, and registering for New Student Orientation — so you’re ready to register for classes.
- Submitting your transcripts from previous courses you completed
-
Meet With Your Advisor
After completing all of your checklists, please meet with an HCC Academic Advisor to select a VA-approved degree program or certificate plan. Your advisor will help you decide which classes to take for your program.
TSI College Placement Test
Your advisor may ask you to complete the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) College Readiness Requirements to help determine which classes you should take in your first semester.
-
Choose and Register for Classes
After you've discussed your program plan and class placements with your advisor, you can register for classes in the student system. Make sure to only register for classes on your approved degree plan. Your benefits DO NOT cover classes that are not on your degree plan.
Make Sure to Certify Courses to Receive BenefitsFor each Federal VA educational benefit awarded, remember to submit a VMASS Certification Request. This form is required for any schedule changes, i.e. Add, Drop, Swap.
If applicable, you must also submit a Hazlewood Certification Request.
