- Step 1) Is the activity a systematic investigation designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge?
- If yes, proceed to Step 2. Examples include a research paper or dissertation.
- If no, then stop. Activity is not research so no IRB review is required. Examples include survey or focus groups about HCC services for program improvement.
- Step 2) Does the research involve obtaining information about living individuals?
- If yes, proceed to Step 3. Examples include HCC students or
- If no, then stop. Activity is not research involving human subjects, so no IRB review required. An example is the history of
- Step 3) Does the research involve intervention or interaction with those individuals?
- If yes, then stop. Activity is research involving human subjects; therefore, IRB review is required. Examples include interviews with students or faculty.
- If no, then proceed to Step 4. For example, data from PeopleSoft.
- Step 4) Is the gathered information individually identifiable? That is, can the identity of the subject be readily ascertained by the researcher or associated with the information?
- If yes, proceed to Step 5. For example, individual Peoplesoft
- If no, then stop. Activity is not research involving human subjects, so no IRB review required. An example includes aggregated HCC enrollment.
- Step 5) Is the information "private"? That is, is the information about behavior that occurs in a context in which an individual can reasonably expect that no observation or recording is taking place, or provided for specific purposes by an individual and which the individual can reasonably expect will not be made public?
- If yes, then Activity is research involving human subjects; therefore, IRB review is required. Examples include student interaction in online courses or forums.
- If no, then stop. Activity is not research involving human subjects, so no IRB review required. An example includes anonymous public discussion
