For HCC student Keonte Sowunmi, learning happens everywhere— whether that’s in the classroom or out in the city helping METRO riders navigate their routes. When he’s not studying, Sowunmi is on the move as a member of METRO’s Street Team, a customer-facing role he’s held for about a year.

A major hurdle for students  wanting to jump into engineering is finding simple experiments accessible to beginners. That’s why two members in the Engineering Department HCC Northwest have sought to ease this barrier by creating a manual of lab experiments for novice learners.

The application period for the HCC Innovation Grants is now open. Established by the HCC Foundation and the Chancellor's Office, the Innovation Grants recognize and promote exceptional faculty and staff dedicated to experimenting with new strategies, techniques, and processes that enhance the student experience at Houston City College.

These programs connect classroom education with real-world application––helping students develop the skills, confidence and industry connections they need to succeed. For Houston employers, apprenticeships offer a pipeline of motivated, prepared talent ready to contribute on day one.

At 45, Roshell Brisby decided her time had finally come. A single mother of four adult children, she had spent years putting her own education on hold while raising her family and working. In 2018, she earned her GED and immediately started an associate degree program at HCC, determined to build a new career path for herself.​

This spring, IDEAStudio, the makerspace at Houston City College's West Houston Institute, is offering free tool trainings for members looking to build new creative skills.
