TxCHSE (GED© & High School Equivalency)

The Houston City College Adult Education & Literacy (AEL) program offers free and low-cost classes to help adults build the skills they need for college, career, and everyday success. We provide Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency (TxCHSE), commonly known as GED, test preparation and English as a Second Language (ESL) courses throughout the greater Houston area. Our classes support both native and non-native speakers in strengthening reading, writing, math, and language skills.

All TxCHSE preparation subjects—including math, social studies, language, and reading—are taught in a comprehensive, supportive classroom environment. Before enrolling, prospective students attend an orientation and registration session to learn about program expectations, class schedules, and locations. Orientation typically lasts about two hours and helps ensure students are prepared to succeed from day one.

Students ages 19 and older may enroll without additional authorization. Students ages 16–18 must complete a required authorization process before registering. Orientation details, documentation requirements, and class availability are provided during the registration process.

If you are interested in testing directly for the TxCHSE rather than taking preparation classes, please visit the Texas Education Agency website for more information.

Before enrolling in a class, applicants are required to attend an orientation/registration information session about our program and learn about locations, dates and times of classes.  Potential students can obtain orientation/registration information by calling (713) 718-5400.
