Accounting, A.A.S.
The Accounting program provides students with occupational and technical instruction, continuing education, college-parallel courses, professional assistance, and resources for learning. This program prepares students for careers as paraprofessionals in accounting firms assisting certified public accountants as generalists who prepare taxes, perform audits, and prepare financial statements.
The Accounting program offers courses that qualify students for the CPA exam. The Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, 333 Guadalupe, Tower 3, Suite 900, Austin, TX 78701-3900, 512.305.7800, Fax 512.305.7854 has accredited these courses for CPA candidates. The website for the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy is www.tsbpa.state.tx.us.
In addition, please note that a student may only earn one Occupational Skills Award (OSA) per academic year.
TSI testing required prior to first enrollment for all AAS degrees and Level II certificates.
Students will be able to:
- Students will complete cycle and prepare financial statements utilizing EXCEL or computerized software packages such as Quickbooks Pro.
- Students will evaluate taxation issues and prepare tax returns utilizing computerized software package such as Tax ACT.
- Students will reconcile and verify account balances and audit effectiveness of internal control on financial reporting.
- Students will read (bypass distractors), Listen (focus on accounting concepts), Speak and Write (focus on financial reporting standards and guidelines).

The Payroll Specialist Certificate prepares students to perform activities associated with human resources, payroll transactions, payroll tax compliance and filing of all quarterly and yearly payroll tax reports required by company policies and government regulations.

Data Analytics in Accounting & Tax, ESC
The accounting profession is facing new challenges in the areas of tax, auditing, fraud, and accounting information systems. The completion of the Data Analytics in Accounting and Tax, Enhanced Skills Certificate (ESC) will allow current and future accountants to address those challenges and gain a deeper insight into the clients’ businesses to make more informed decisions, ultimately leading to improved financial forecasting, enhanced risk management, and more accurate financial reporting.
Students registering for the Certificate must have earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting or an AAS degree in accounting. The four courses (12 EQH) in this certificate are also CPA exam-qualifying courses but count towards the CPA exam qualification only if they are taken after earning a bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. Students planning to enroll in this enhanced skill certificate program are highly advised to see the accounting department chair prior to enrollment.
