Construction Management Technology - General, A.A.S.

The Construction Management Technology program is designed to develop qualified personnel for employment in the field of construction or to enhance the workplace skills of those already employed in the industry for career advancement. Job opportunities include management and supervisory positions in construction of residential and commercial buildings and other related industries.

The Construction Technology program is designed to develop qualified personnel for employment in the field of construction or to enhance the workplace skills of those already employed in the industry for career advancement. In addition, please note that a student may only earn one Occupational Skills Award (OSA) per academic year.

TSI testing required prior to first enrollment for all AAS degrees and Level II certificates.

Construction C.O.E. earns first national accreditation

  • After a recent site visit and review by Blair Williamson, Director of Training and Development for the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), the non-profit construction industry foundation has affirmed that four construction-related programs
    at HCC – the core curriculum, electrical, welding and HVAC programs - are in good standing.

  • This designation means students in these areas of study may receive NCCER credentials upon with successful completion of program modules. The NCCER designation is the first national certification and accreditation for HCC’s Construction C.O.E.

  • Background: NCCER is a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) education foundation created by the construction industry to develop standardized curriculum with portable credentials and to help address the skilled, construction workforce shortage. NCCER is recognized by the industry as the training, assessment, certification, and career development standard for the construction and maintenance craft professional.

Students enrolled in this certificate obtain basic skills required in the construction industry, including safety regulations, trade standards and practices, blueprint reading, basic carpentry, air conditioning, electrical, and plumbing skills.

Residential Construction, O.S.A.

Occupational Skills Award
Education track: Continuing Education

HCC’s Residential Construction Certificate is developed to train the next generation of builders, contractors, and entrepreneurs. Within 6 months, this training will provide students with hands-on experience on the process involved in building a home. Students will interpret blueprints, understand construction math, frame floors, walls, ceilings, and roofs while practicing worksite safety. HCC-Career & Job Placement Services are available to assist students in job search.

Prerequisites: HS Diploma/GED recommended, 17 years of age

Supplies: Students are responsible for the purchase of their textbook and tools.

Construction Framers, O.S.A.

Occupational Skills Award
Education track: Continuing Education

This program includes carpentry and basic framing, course includes erect wood frame structures with emphasis on layout. Course covers terminology, how to read blueprints, and safety procedures for using hand tools, power tools and structural materials; teaches basic skills needed to become a residential carpenter.

Introduction to Carpentry

CRPT 1029    96 Hours       Fee $899      Prerequisites: None

Introduction to Carpentry will cover introduction to the carpentry trade including safety, tools, equipment, terminology, and methods. Use established safe work practices; describe fasteners and adhesives; define terms associated with building materials utilized by carpenters; describe handling and storage procedures; demonstrate the use and care of tools and equipment; and perform mathematical computations used by the carpenter.


 

Basic Framing

CRPT 1001    48 Hours         Fee $629         Prerequisite: CRPT 1029 Introduction to Carpentry

Basic Framing course will cover skills required to erect wood frame structures with emphasis on layout and construction of floors, walls, and roofs. Includes safety procedures for using hand and power tools and structural materials.

Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) for Continuing Education Students

NCCER Scaffolding, O.S.A.

Occupational Skills Award
Education track: Continuing Education

NCCER Scaffolding prepares trainees to perform safely on the job site, with information on tools and equipment they will use in the industry, as well as discussion of stationary, mobile, and suspension scaffolds. This course includes all NCCER Core and NCCER Scaffolding curriculum modules.

Entry-level scaffold builders assist with constructing a secure scaffold to act as a working platform for construction and industrial projects. After the completion of those projects, demolition of the scaffold is required.  Entry-level builders are also responsible for loading and unloading tools, material and equipment to/from the job site while conducting safe work procedures.

Entrance Requirements

  • 18 years or older.
  • Course completion of NCCER Core: Introductory to Craft Skills

  • Trainees must supply and wear steel-toed boots to all classes.
  • Trainees must wear appropriate clothing such as work pants and a work shirt to all classes.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs without assistance.
  • Must be able to work on your feet over a period of time.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and stairs.
  • Must be able to manage heights.
  • Must be able to wear protective equipment and tools.
  • Must be able to tolerate outside climate conditions.

Plumbing Technician, O.S.A.

Occupational Skills Award

Plumbing is one of the attractive sectors of the skilled trades covering broad-spectrum of the industry today. An individual working in plumbing trade, may use modern technology as tools, specializes in the maintenance, installation, repair, and replacement of plumbing systems, used for the distribution of water and removal of waste and sewage in buildings.

In this course, students will learn to apply mathematical calculations related to plumbing trade, hand and power tools, and safety practices. Learn how to measure, cut, join and support testing of plastic pipes and groove copper tubes. Learn types of steel pipefittings, valves, how to measure, cut and join hangers and supports used with steel pipes. How to choose faucets and fixtures for a variety of installation materials. Learn about DWV (drain-waste vent) system design. Course will prepare the individual for basic, entry-level employment position in the Plumbing industry.

The course is designed to provide hands-on experience in drywall installation, including rig drywall on frames, ceilings, apply moldings, cover seams between drywall sheets and pieces, patching and applying ceiling texture. It also focuses on preparing students for safe use of hand and power tools. Students learn and practice how to install drywall safely, apply primer and finish, and clean using the techniques.
