Through hands-on training and real-world experience, students gain the skills and knowledge needed for certification and a career in emergency care. Emergency Medical Services, A.A.S.

Associate of Applied Science (AAS)
Education track: University Transfer

The two-year Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program goal is to prepare competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains with or without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels. Successful program graduates are awarded certificates of completion to become certified as an EMT, AEMT (Advanced EMT), or Paramedic practitioner. After paramedic coursework is completed an AAS in Emergency Medical Services can be obtained. Licensure to practice will be granted via the Texas Department of State Health Services once the National Registry Certification Test is passed.

The program is designed to orient students to entry and advanced-level emergency care as it relates to assessment, treatment, management, and ongoing evaluation of the critically ill and injured patients in their care. Advanced standing credit may be awarded for relevant education and/or experience.

NOTE: Upon successful completion of EMSP 1501/1160, students are eligible to sit for the National Registry EMT exam. Upon successful completion of EMSP 1338, 2205,1356,1355 and 1263, students are eligible to sit for the National Registry AEMT Exam. Upon successful completion of EMSP 2306, 2444, 2160, 2434, 2430, 2261, 2262, and 2143, students are eligible to sit for the National Registry Paramedic exam.

Students accepted into the EMS program are required to pay a liability insurance fee which protects the students against losses resulting from malpractice claims. Clinical assignments are made in more than one hospital and field internship site, and all students are expected to rotate through clinical sites as assigned. Transportation between locations is the responsibility of the student. Students must complete all hourly requirements as filed with the Texas Department of State Health Services and Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)

Applicants must submit documents required by the Emergency Medical Services program, to CastleBranch, an online platform for entrance into the program. Applicants educated in non-English speaking countries must complete the TOEFL exam with a minimum score of 20 in each of the 4 required elements.

Enhanced Skills Certificate (ESC)

Public Safety Telecommunicator - 911 Dispatcher, O.S.A.

Occupational Skills Award
Education track: Continuing Education

This program offers academic instructional and hands-on skills training covering all three-curriculum topics in Public Safety (Law Enforcement, Fire and EMS). Students will learn to demonstrate radio operations, identify legal issues regarding telecommunications, process radio logs and documentation, and prioritize emergency calls for management. The Tele-communicator curriculum approved by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) prepares students for the Basic Tele-communicator licensing exam.

The Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) establishes eligibility. HCC requires documentation a cadet that is competent at college-level reading and writing prior to admission. An academic advisor will examine your transcript to determine if you meet the academic prerequisite.

The general requirements are listed below:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • College Ready Reading and Writing
  • 18 Years of Age Before Graduation from the Academy
  • Generally, No Prior Convictions, Community Supervision or Deferred Adjudication
  • Fingerprint Submission
  • Examination by a Physician; Including a Drug Screen
