The Heavy Vehicle, Diesel, and Industrial Technology program at Houston City College prepares students for entry-level careers in Texas’s growing heavy equipment and diesel industries. Students receive hands-on training in diesel engine repair, diagnostics, and preventive maintenance for commercial trucks, buses, industrial machinery, and other heavy-duty vehicles. In addition, we offers specialized training in truck driving and forklift operation, providing students with a well-rounded foundation for careers in the transportation and industrial sectors.

Associate of Applied Science (AAS)
Education track: University Transfer

The Heavy Vehicle, Diesel & Industrial Technology Program prepares students for a technical career in the multifaceted diesel industry. The Heavy Vehicle & Industrial Technology, A.A.S. award will prepare students to maintain and repair Heavy Vehicle and Truck Technology. This degree will be in accordance with an Accredited Industry Partner (AED Foundation), and the third area of specialization will be in the maintenance and repair of Industrial and stationary Diesel engine applications. Each industry-designed pathway will prepare the student with the necessary technical knowledge and soft skills to meet the demands of today’s diesel industry workforce.

The Heavy Vehicle, Diesel and Industrial Technology Program provides skilled and knowledgeable entry-level employees to the heavy-duty commercial trucking and the heavy equipment industries through out Texas. Employers actively seek Houston City College’s Heavy Vehicle, Diesel & Industrial Technology graduates to work as diesel engine or maintenance specialists and field technicians.

Specialized classroom and practical lab work experiences are used to prepare students for a long career in the Heavy Vehicle, Diesel & Industrial Technology industry. Commercial Truck Driver, O.S.A.

Occupational Skills Award
Education track: Continuing Education

An overview of the Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License written test including preparation for passing the Commercial Driver’s License examination, general truck driving skills with hands-on component, and instruction coordinated with the Department of Transportation. An overview of the Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License written test including preparation for passing the Commercial Driver’s License examination, general truck driving skill with hands-on component, and instruction coordinated with the Department of Transportation.

Trucks deliver 70 percent of all freight tonnage and 80 percent of U.S. communities receive their goods exclusively by truck. There are currently 3.5 million commercial drivers, averaging $50,000 annually. Over the next ten years the American Trucking Association (ATA) projects a need for 96,178 new drivers per year. These opportunities exist because of industry growth (36%), retirement (37%), drivers not meeting current guidelines (16%) and changing careers (11%). This offers an excellent opportunity for a new career.

Applicant must meet all requirements of the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Houston City College including:

  • Be at least 18-years-old for intrastate; 21-years-old interstate
  • Pass a DOT physical
  • Pass DOT drug test
  • Have a good driving record
  • Have a valid Class C Driver’s License
