Students in the music program also gain exposure to the commercial and creative sides of the industry. Coursework and hands-on experiences prepare them to become music business professionals, arrangers, songwriters, producers, and performers. By developing both artistic and industry-focused skills, students learn how to navigate today’s diverse musical landscape and pursue a variety of career pathways in the field.

Music, A.A.
The Music program at HCC offers an AA in Music degree in addition to supporting the core curriculum and encouraging the general study of music for all HCC students. Courses that fulfill the Creative Arts Core requirement include MUSI 1302 Fundamentals of Music, MUSI 1306 Music Appreciation, MUSI 1307 Music Literature, and MUSI 1310 American Music. These courses are available in face to face and distance education sections. Other classes are offered in applied music (Guitar, Piano, and Voice), ensembles (Instrumental and Vocal) and limited private instruction (permission numbers are required, and majors receive priority registration). The curriculum aligns with the state Field of Study in Music and is transferrable to public institutions in Texas. Graduates from the HCC music program transfer to many institutions both in and out of the state of Texas, and work professionally in the field. To be eligible for an Associate in Arts (AA), an Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT), or an Associate in Science (AS) degree from HCC, a student must successfully:
Complete at least 60 semester hours of credit as follows: (a) for the AA degree, 43 hours of required core courses and 17 hours of transferable electives, usually focusing on the student's transfer major (b) for the AAT degree, 44 hours of required core courses plus 16-18 hours of required pre-teaching courses (c) for the AS degree, 43 hours of required core courses plus six additional hours of mathematics, four additional hours of natural science, and 7 hours of transferable electives, usually focusing on the student's transfer major.
- Complete a minimum of 18 semester hours toward the degree in the Houston City College System. These hours may not be satisfied through credit by exam.
- Have an overall 2.0 HCC grade point average.
- Satisfy TSI requirements.
- Resolve all financial obligations and return all College materials, including library books, to HCC prior to graduation.
Students will be able to:

Keyboard Skills: The student will demonstrate mastery of scales, chords, & harmonization of melodies using varied accompaniment techniques. Students will perform selected compositions and demonstrate competence in various transpositions.

Music Theory Skills: The student will analyze and compose advanced 4 measure segments which include; harmony, melody, rhythm, and cadences.

Ear Training Skills: The student will sing and notate diatonic and chromatic intervals, chords, rhythms, and harmonic chord progressions.

Music Literature Skills: The student will be able to identify and describe the periods of music history including general style characteristics, major composers of each period, and representative works. Students will be able to critically evaluate musical works and articulate the relationship between historical events and musical styles/aesthetics.

Ensemble Performance Skills: The student will apply learned vocal/instrumental skills and techniques in an ensemble performance.

Solo Performance Skills: The student will demonstrate learned vocal/instrumental skills and techniques in a jury of 5-10 minutes of music appropriate to MUAP Semester 4 SLO’s in a solo performance.
