Vocational Advancement & Skills Training
For more than 35 years, the HCC VAST Academy has been a trusted pathway to possibility for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) across the Houston community. Grounded in dignity, access, and high expectations, VAST Academy supports students in building academic foundations, college readiness, career readiness, independence, and self-advocacy—preparing them not only for employment, but for meaningful participation in college, the workforce, and community life. As one of Houston City College’s longest-standing specialized programs, VAST continues to evolve to meet the needs of today’s learners while honoring a legacy of inclusion, equity, and student success.
- Must be 18 years of age or above.
- Must have a high school diploma.
- Complete formal admissions process and meet minimum requirements to be accepted.
- Tuesday/Thursday Cohort must have a min. 2.5 grade academic level on TABE Test in reading, math and writing.
- Monday/Wednesday Pre-College Cohort min. fourth grade and above academic level on TABE Test in reading math and writing.
- Must be able to function independently in a classroom setting and on campus.
- Must be able to follow the College Code of Student Conduct independently.

The VAST Academy Eagles Club remains one of the most active student organizations on campus, hosting numerous campus-wide events and community service projects each year.
Student leaders are recognized each year at annual college award ceremonies. Some have received "Student Leader of the Year," awards/scholarships and Eagles Club has been awarded "Student Organization oft he Year," numerous times.
Houston City College’s VAST Academy would like to partner with your company to expand employment and internship opportunities for our students. The VAST Academy provides comprehensive certificate programs in Office Skills and Occupational Skills to individuals that prefer or benefit from a personalized training format. Our students are trained on software programs that are in demand in the business sector such as: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. In addition to training in Microsoft Office, our students are trained in Customer Service, Records Management, Business Etiquette and Business Communication.

Mission
VAST Academy provides post-secondary transition programs and comprehensive support services, which lead to meaningful credentials, employment and independence for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Opportunities include vocational certificates, precollege and freshman success bridge courses, career readiness credentials, internships and employment assistance offered through an inclusive, relevant and affordable avenue.

Occupational Skills/Career Readiness Certificate
The Occupational Skills Certificate Program is a two-year career readiness workforce credential, offering courses that enhance functional reading, math and writing. Students develop basic computer/financial literacy and
human relations skills for the workplace.
Support Services
Students receive assistance through a “person centered planning” approach with identifying realistic career goals by developing a vocational degree plan and participating in an internship following the completion of required coursework. Job placement assistance is offered upon successful completion The program’s successful supportive strategies include:

Pathways Bridge to Careers
Pathways Bridge to Careers provides comprehensive wraparound services to support students with intellectual and developmental disabilities as they pursue industry-specific credentials at Houston City College. Through individualized guidance, academic support, and career readiness resources, a Success Coach, and Transition Team empower students to achieve meaningful employment and lifelong success.
Key Support: Designated Case Manager/Success Coach, Peer Mentoring, Person-Centered Career Exploration and Academic Planning, Assistance Navigating College Enrollment and Financial Aid, Coordination with Ability ADA Services and Advising, and Facilitate Acess to College and Community Resources
Requirements: Student must be 18+, Identify as neurodivergent or have an intellectual and/or developmental disability, Be able to function independently in a typical classroom setting, navigate the campus and classroom environment, college level classwork and communicate with instructor and/or peers.
