This Academic Advising Syllabus is intended to guide advising interactions and serve as a roadmap throughout your enrollment with Houston City College.

Academic Advising is an intentional, collaborative, and ongoing partnership between the advisor and the student. More importantly, this partnership involves proactive participation between the advisor and the student. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with their assigned Academic Advisor at least once per year. Our goal in Advising is to assist you with completing your academic, career, and personal goals. Academic Advising Mission Statement

Academic Advising at Houston City College (HCC) provides a holistic student-centered experience inspiring students towards academic achievement and empowering students to develop educational and career pathways through collaborative relationships with advisors, faculty and staff.

  • When sending an email or leaving a voicemail, be sure to include your name, student ID#, and phone number with area code. Please be mindful of background noises or distractions and speak slowly and clearly.
  • Register for the upcoming semester as early as possible. Review the academic calendar for important dates and deadlines.

  • Prepare a list of questions to discuss at your advising meeting.

First Year 0-30 Hours

0-15 Hours 

Group Advising

Individual Advising 

  •  Understand how to navigate the MyEagle portal.
  • Identify your intended educational and career pathway choice.
  • Understand the transfer requirements for the transfer institution you selected.
  • Understand the importance of Core Curriculum and degree completion.
  • Maintain consistent contact with your Academic Advisor.
  • Be familiar with important policies (residency requirements, 6 drop, and 3 peat).
  • Understand college resources.
  • Understand and know the academic registration calendar.

16-30 Hours

Individual Advising
  • Maintain consistent contact with your Academic Advisor.
  • Commit to a plan of study within a pathway and a transfer.
  • Review your EaglePlan with your Academic Advisor and make necessary updates.
  • Understand your academic standing, and how it can affect your transfer and degree plans.
  • Explore scholarship and internship opportunities.
 

Second Year 31+ Hours

 

31-45 Hours

Individual Advising
  • Maintain consistent contact with your Academic Advisor.
  • Monitor academic progress and plan for graduation and/or transfer.
  • Review your EaglePlan in preparation for completion.
  • Utilize college resources for career and job readiness services.
  • Know the admissions process and deadlines for your transfer institution.
 

 45+ Hours 

Individual Advising 
  • Maintain consistent contact with your Academic Advisor.
  • Complete degree audit and submit a graduation application when you have 14 or fewer credit hours remaining in your program.
  • Meet with Career Services to create a resume.
  • Request transcripts to be sent to the transfer institution.
  • Be familiar with transfer information regarding financial aid assistance.
