These programs connect classroom education with real-world application––helping students develop the skills, confidence and industry connections they need to succeed. For Houston employers, apprenticeships offer a pipeline of motivated, prepared talent ready to contribute on day one.

At 45, Roshell Brisby decided her time had finally come. A single mother of four adult children, she had spent years putting her own education on hold while raising her family and working. In 2018, she earned her GED and immediately started an associate degree program at HCC, determined to build a new career path for herself.​

Upon arriving in Dallas to compete in the Pierre Cardin Young Designers Award (PCYDA) competition, Houston City College Fashion Design Student Matthew Simbajon was a nervous wreck.

Jason Loring chose to pursue his education in Manufacturing Engineering Technology at Houston City College where he felt a sense of fellowship and camaraderie with both his instructors and advisors.

Kalika Hocking chose Coleman because of its outstanding board exam pass rates, its excellent reputation, and its location in the Texas Medical Center with all the opportunities it offers.

When Ben Mendez walked the halls of Houston City College’s Southeast Campus in the late 1980s, he couldn’t have imagined the cultural legacy he would one day help build for the city of Houston. Today, as executive director of the Mariachi Festival in Houston, Mendez credits HCC with providing both the academic foundation and the community network that shaped his journey.

After spending more than 20 years in the transportation industry, John Russell Spear, Jr., decided it was time for a new direction. John enrolled at HCC Northeast where, in May 2025, he earned an Associate of Applied Science in Instrumentation and Controls Engineering Technology.

Two alumni of the HCC Veterans Entrepreneurship Program have been named among the top five finalists for the inaugural National Entrepreneur of the Year award from the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship.

Kinzah Ali is a proud graduate of the Houston City College Northwest College, where in 2020, she earned an Associate of Science Degree before completing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from University of Texas at Tyler.
