Students gain practical skills, real-world experience, and the confidence to support anesthesia professionals in surgical and procedural environments.

Dental Assistants work under the supervision of a licensed dentist and assist in the care and treatment of dental patients. They perform a variety of important functions in the dental office. As a vital member of the dental health team, the dental assistant prepares the patient for treatment, provides the dentist with necessary instruments, instructs patients in proper oral hygiene, records dental services, and performs various laboratory procedures and managerial duties for the office.

The Dental Hygiene program at Houston City College – Coleman College for Health Sciences prepares students to become entry-level dental hygienists ready to serve the oral health needs of the community. Training includes classroom instruction, hands-on labs, and clinical practice to build strong patient-care and technical skills.

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program is a four-semester program including online lectures, in-person labs and offsite clinical rotations. Classes can be on any day of the week, including the weekend. The program will let the students know in advance of their schedule.

A Health Information Technician—often referred to as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)—manages and analyzes patient health records in healthcare settings. These professionals organize, code, evaluate, and maintain medical data while working closely with administrative and financial departments to support accurate billing, compliance, and quality patient care.

The Healthcare Management program prepares students for administrative and leadership roles in healthcare organizations. Students gain foundational knowledge in healthcare operations, management, finance, ethics, and health information systems. The program emphasizes practical skills, critical thinking, and effective communication needed to support quality care and efficient healthcare delivery. Graduates are prepared for entry-level management positions or continued education in healthcare administration.

Histologic Technicians (HT) play a vital role in patient diagnosis, treatment, and care. Working in histology labs—where cancer diagnoses are often made, they prepare and analyze tissue samples that help physicians identify diseases.

The Human Service Technology Program prepares students to support individuals, families, and communities through compassionate, skill-based service. Students gain practical training in communication, ethics, and case management, leading to careers in social services, community agencies, and related fields or continued education. This program is approved by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and has been a member of the South Southwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center consortium (SSWATTC) funded by Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) since 1993.

The Medical Biotechnology Program provides students with a strong foundation in the biological and laboratory techniques used in modern medicine and healthcare research. Through hands-on training and coursework in molecular biology, biotechnology, and laboratory procedures, students develop the skills needed for careers in clinical labs, biomedical research, and the biotechnology industry, as well as for continued education in health and science-related fields.

The Medical Laboratory Technician Program prepares students for vital roles in healthcare by training them to perform laboratory tests that support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Through hands-on laboratory experience and rigorous coursework, students develop skills in clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and laboratory safety, leading to careers in hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic laboratories or continued education in the clinical sciences.

The Nuclear Medicine Technology Program at Houston City College offers two flexible pathways to fit students’ schedules and career goals. In the two-year daytime program, students receive comprehensive instruction from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through classroom learning, hands-on training in on-site labs, and supervised clinical rotations at partnering medical facilities.

Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs) help people of all ages develop, recover, or improve the skills needed for daily living and working. Under the supervision of an occupational therapist, OTAs work with patients who are recovering from injury, illness, or disability to build strength, coordination, and independence through therapeutic activities. They may assist patients in learning how to perform everyday tasks such as dressing, cooking, or using adaptive equipment, helping individuals live more independently at home, school, or work.
