For Houston City College (HCC), 2025 was both a year of milestones and turning points. After nearly 55 years as Houston Community College, the institution stepped confidently into the future with a new name, one that captures the energy, ambition and innovation taking shape across our campuses.

Nine years ago, Rubén Durán and Charlotte Hamilton had a vision to transform a simple meeting room into a Virtual Reality Lab. As co-founders of Houston City College’s (HCC) first virtual reality lab in 2016, the duo visionaries created a learning space to empower students to turn learning into leadership, and innovation into opportunities. On Wednesday, Oct. 22, Their vision led to a ribbon cutting for the Innovation Hub for Immersive Learning at the HCC Central Campus.

His doctoral graduation ceremony took place on September 27, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada, marking the culmination of an intense and transformative academic journey.
